What is DTF printing?
DTF (Direct to Film) is a modern garment decoration method where a full-color design is printed onto a special PET film, coated with adhesive powder, cured, and then heat-pressed onto fabric. The result is a vibrant, flexible print that adheres to virtually any fabric type and color.
Unlike screen printing, DTF does not require separate screens for each color, which makes it cost-effective for multi-color and photographic designs. Unlike embroidery, DTF can reproduce gradients, fine details, and full-color images with no limitation on color count.
DTF printing has become one of the fastest-growing decoration methods in the custom apparel industry because it combines the versatility of direct-to-garment (DTG) printing with better durability and lower per-unit cost on medium-sized runs.
How DTF printing works
Design preparation
Your artwork is formatted for print. We accept PNG, PDF, AI, SVG, and EPS files. Full-color designs, gradients, and photographic images all work.
Film printing
The design is printed onto a clear PET film using specialized DTF inks (CMYK + white). The white ink layer creates an opaque base that allows the design to show on any fabric color, including black.
Adhesive powder application
A fine hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink surface. This bonds the print to the garment during heat pressing.
Curing
The film is run through a curing oven to melt and set the adhesive powder, creating a ready-to-apply transfer.
Heat pressing
The cured transfer is placed on the garment and pressed at ~300–330°F (150–165°C) for 15–20 seconds. The design bonds permanently to the fabric. After cooling, the film is peeled away.

DTF Printing
Best for: full-color designs, gradients, photos, small-to-medium runs (12–200 pcs). Works on any fabric color. No color limits. Smooth, flexible feel.
Embroidery
Best for: simple logos, text, uniforms, hats, polos, workwear. Raised, textured, premium finish. Extremely durable. Pricing based on stitch count.
Screen Printing
Best for: large runs (100+ pcs) of simple 1–3 color designs. Lowest per-unit cost at high volume. Each color requires a separate screen.

How long do DTF prints last?

- 2) Use mild detergent - avoid bleach
- 3) Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry
- 4) Do not iron directly on the print
- 5) Avoid dry cleaning
DTF prints are generally more flexible and crack-resistant than traditional screen prints, but not as permanent as embroidery which is stitched into the fabric itself.
